A Look at the Latest in Mazda SKYACTIV Technology

Last updated 6 years ago

While many car makers are producing impressive hybrid vehicles and alternatively fueled engines, the fact of the matter is that most Americans will continue to drive conventionally fueled vehicles for the next few decades. Mazda engineers, instead of developing an expensive hybrid system that few drivers may ever use, have worked to create hybrid-level fuel efficiency in an affordable, gas-powered car for the masses. Read on to learn more about Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology.

For Mazda’s engineers, the first step in creating an efficient car was creating an efficient engine. Two of these were developed—one for gasoline and one for diesel. SKYACTIV-G, the gas engine, uses an innovative exhaust system, cavity pistons, and direct injection to allow for a compression ratio of 14.0:1—the highest compression ratio in the world. SKYACTIV-D, the diesel engine, has the exact same compression ratio, which is remarkably low for a diesel engine. These features result in a huge boost in efficiency.

SKYACTIV Transmissions

Many manufacturers put too much focus on the engine and fuel source when striving for peak efficiency, taking for granted the efficiency of their transmissions. Mazda engineers know that there is always room for improvement, and created two transmissions that increase the fuel economy of SKYACTIV-equipped vehicles. SKYACTIV-Drive was designed to take advantage of the best aspects of all transmission types—conventional automatic, CVT, and dual-clutch. The manual option, SKYACTIV-MT, uses a compact design and significant weight reduction to offer a crisper, quicker shifting experience.

Of course, the simple principle of reducing weight to increase fuel efficiency was considered and put into practice. Mazda created a rigid, lightweight frame makes up SKYACTIV-Body, offering greater safety and better performance. The other part of the high-efficiency platform is SKYACTV-Chassis, which includes a refined system of lightweight steering and suspension components that contribute to a sportier and more comfortable ride.
